First Baby of the Month Winning Entry for Life Photographic
Congratulations to photographer Wayne Harker-Gill who has achieved his first Baby of the Month winning image!
His image baby of Ramaya proved popular with our Mum judges and Ramaya can look forward to receiving a £100 Mothercare voucher, plus the chance to win £5000 in the 2019 Baby of the Year competition. We look forward to seeing many more winning images from Wayne in the future!
We asked Wayne to tell us more about his career in photography: “Originally from Nottingham, I moved to Liverpool to study Design at John Moore’s University, where photography became a strong influence in my work. During my university years and producing lots of experimental photography, I realised working with the camera I was able to fulfil my creative ideas. The enjoyment of being able to capture images and seeing instantly what you have created was what I loved most about working in this medium.
Photographing people and capturing emotion is what I love and that fed my passion to create great images.
My studio Life Photographic has been established for 15 years. Initially starting out as a family photography studio, the process of owning the studio has definitely been interesting. The journey has taken me to three different premises, each time expanding and looking for new environments to work in and each new studio has enabled me to expand my portfolio. My philosophy is to always keep pushing myself and to keep my work and ideas fresh. I have always built a studio working environment which is a flexible space, enabling me to work quickly and produce fashion-style images.
Over the years my style has changed as I’ve grown with the business, initially starting out with family photography which is still core to my work. Shortly after, I added wedding photography to my services, which seemed to be a natural progression. It didn’t take long to realise a fashion style of photography is where my true passion and skills lie.
The studio now caters for parents who want to have interactive fun family shots. Photos of toddlers and teenagers are now done in a funky fashion style. During the week, the studio provides a warm and cosy space for mums, dads and babies to have their lovely photos taken. For me, baby photography is about making an image that captures a new addition to the family in a way that makes it special to them. It needs to feel like a small piece of photography art that they can cherish.
I love for people to feel totally relaxed and at ease and enjoy their time at the studio. We are situated in the heart of Nottingham’s city centre. On Stoney Street in the Lace Market also known as the creative quarter due to the thriving artists and designers in the area. The studio is in one of the old lace market buildings itself with huge high ceilings. You can step out of the front door into this beautiful area full of impressive examples of 19th century architecture. It’s an amazing vibrant place to be with interesting restaurants, bars, cinema and galleries with creative people who love the city.”
